So you’ve booked your brand photoshoot, now you’re worrying about what to wear for headshots and those full length photos. Been there, done that!
This is why I always like to give my clients some suggestions on what clothing to bring, that will mean you feel more relaxed and just concentrate on your getting your brand documented on the big day.
So here are my top 7 tips to help you pick what to wear for your headshots or brand session:
1. Wear your brand colors
This is the perfect opportunity to work your branding into your photos. This doesn’t have to mean a uniform, but perhaps your logo and website are soft browns and pinks, you’ll want to choose colors that compliment them when choosing your wardrobe. This could be with the whole outfit: a beautiful dress and matching jacket, or it could be simple hair bow or scarf worn with a more neutral outfit. It’s completely up to you, make it individual!
2. Wear solid colors
A headshot is all about you, so you want to avoid distracting patterns. Stripes, polka-dots and patterns can make your image appear distracting in your shots, taking away from the attention that should be on you. They could also potentially clash with the background, depending on the location. It’s best to choose solid colors, which either compliments your skin tone, or ties in with your brand. There are always exceptions to the rule though, for example a printed piece might be perfect for your brand. So just have a think about what the purpose of your headshots is for.
3. Accessorize
Bring your personality into the shot: jewelry can be the perfect way to take your look to being even more stylish and polished. But be selective – less is more, i.e., choose either earrings or the necklace, not both.
Also do you have any tools of the trade that show what you do? Kick Ass Baker did just that with her apron!
4. Choose clothes that fit well
You might already be feeling nervous before the photoshoot anyway, so the last thing you want to do is add any unneeded stress to the day by wearing clothing that is either too tight, baggy or irritating. You’ll end up spending the photoshoot wriggling to adjust your clothing and this awkwardness will show in the photos. Also bare in mind that the photoshoot may go on for a few hours, so you want to make sure you’re comfortable in whatever wardrobe you decide to wear.
5. Keep it modest
Although you might feel super comfortable in your own skin, unless you’re a burlesque dancer or a performer of some kind, then it probably is more advisable to lean on the more conservative side when choosing your wardrobe. The point of your photos is to be taken seriously by your clients, so portraying yourself in a respectable manner is going to be a lot more appropriate for your branding.
6. Don’t bring clothing that is worn out
Although you might typically work in the same worn-out outfit everyday, you want to look polished and professional in your branded photoshoot. An old and worn out outfit is not What to Wear For your Headshot or full photos. It only doesn’t photograph well, but will also convey an unprofessional image. You want to portray a trustworthy and respectable image to your potential clients, so this could be the perfect excuse to go do some shopping!
7. Bring lots of options
This is the perfect opportunity to get a variety of looks, so bring many options but avoid distracting patterns. So just have a think about what the purpose of your photos are for. And feel free to include some comfy looks in there too! We finish off with those clothes to show you in a more relaxed state!
